Our government is supposed to work for us— the people. But right now, the wealthiest corporations are calling the shots on climate.

Instead of phasing out the fossil fuel industry as science requires, the federal government has charged Big Oil with solving a problem it knowingly created.

But the CEOs and billionaires are beholden to wealthy stakeholders— not everyday working people. They will never act in our best interest. That’s why, if we want to win real solutions to the climate crisis, we have to take democratic, public control over much of our economy and force our governments to work for us— not the interests of a wealthy few.

What a People’s Agenda represents.

A People’s Agenda would respond to climate breakdown and the cost of living crisis through society-scale solutions that establish good work, address affordability and secure a dignified life for all. It would pay for itself by taxing ultra-rich billionaires and corporations— the ones who knowingly created the problem in the first place.

  1. Usher in massive investments in the public services and social programs our communities need to thrive;

  2. Guarantee good work for the millions of people who will rebuild our future.

  3. Wind down the fossil fuel industry and build publicly-owned transportation, housing, infrastructure, and ecosystem restoration projects that would help us withstand the impacts of the climate crisis;

  4. Uphold the Rights, Title and Sovereignty of Indigenous peoples;

  5. Build lasting people power that leaves no one behind.

Why We Need a People's Agenda

It’s a tale as old as Canada. From the Indigenous peoples whose lands were stolen to make room for European settlement, to the Chinese labourers who built the Canadian Pacific Railway for pennies, to the asbestos miners in Québec whose bosses hid the truth that their work was killing them — the rich and powerful have rigged the rules in their favour. And in so doing, they have caused irreparable harm to our communities and the land.

And now, a handful of billionaires are standing in the way of repair. The ultra-wealthy know they have no place in a healthy world— and they’re terrified we’ll realize it too. That’s why, every day, they work to keep us distracted, isolated, and hopeless. They hide from us in their private jets and super yachts. They run from the media, then spend millions on slick marketing campaigns to cast themselves as good actors. And they play the same tricks on our government— lobbying politicians to weaken environmental protections, siphoning off billions of taxpayer dollars in handouts and subsidies, and slowly encroaching on our hard-won social services.

But we deserve so much more than the billionaires have to offer. We deserve a new People’s Agenda: one that will take power from the hands of the ultra-rich and return it to us— all while expanding social services, creating millions of decent jobs, and returning land to Indigenous peoples. And where the billionaires are driven by greed, we’re driven by a fierce and sustaining love — for our communities, for our children, and the flourishing of all life. That's what a People's Agenda represents.

Demands

A People’s Agenda needs to be formed from the ground-up— a real reflection of the needs and desires of each community, big and small, across the country. Most importantly, it would bring us closer to the world we all deserve— one in which all people are guaranteed dignified and meaningful work, free public transportation, and a beautiful place to call home. A world in which everyone lives in right relationship with each other and the land. Will you be a part of building that vision?
